Abstract
André Chamson's Le Puits des miracles (1945) is a satirical novel set in the south-west of France in 1942. Unoccupied by the Germans until November 1942, his anonymous community appears confused over its identity and marginalised as regards the world conflict. This article proposes to analyse this portrait of a community in turmoil, representative, on a smaller scale, of a nation that could no longer be certain whether it was at war or at peace.
